TikTok’s parent company ByteDance has launched its latest artificial intelligence image generation tool, Seedream 4.0, with advanced editing capabilities. The Seed Department, which manages the company’s AI technologies, announced the update on Tuesday.
Seedream 4.0 is positioned as a direct competitor to Google DeepMind’s Nano Banana, also known as Gemini 2.5 Flash Image. According to ByteDance, the new model outperformed Gemini 2.5 Flash Image on its internal benchmark Magicbench, particularly in areas such as prompt accuracy, alignment and aesthetics, as reported by a common source.
Key Features of Seedream 4.0
Seedream 4.0 introduces several advanced features for both creation and editing:

Image editing: Users can add, delete, replace or modify elements within images using text prompts. ByteDance advises keeping instructions clear and precise for better results.

Reference image use: The tool extracts details such as design, style and product features from reference images, enabling character creation, style transfer and product design.

Multi-image input: Users can now upload multiple images for composite editing, including replacements, combinations and style transfers. Clear instructions for each image are recommended.

Image sequences: The tool supports consistent image sequences with continuity in character and style, useful for storyboarding, comics and product design such as emoji packs.
Prompt Guide for Better Results
ByteDance has shared guidelines to help users maximise Seedream 4.0’s capabilities:

Use simple and natural language to describe the subject, action and environment. Include style, colour, lighting or composition details when needed.

Clearly state the application scenario or purpose of the image in the prompt.

For specific styles, include accurate style-related keywords or reference images.

For text rendering within images, place the required words inside double quotation marks.
With Seedream 4.0, ByteDance is pushing further into the competitive field of AI image generation, taking on one of Google DeepMind’s latest offerings.
