Astrophel Aerospace Unveils Indigenous Cryogenic Pump for Rocket Engines

Pune based Astrophel Aerospace has introduced its indigenously developed cryogenic pump, designed to reach speeds of 25,000 revolutions per minute, which will power its upcoming Astra C1 rocket engine. The pump is currently undergoing tests at ISRO facilities and is expected to be upgraded into a turbopump for integration into Astrophel’s first and second stage engines by 2026.

“This milestone is a testament to how India can indigenously develop advanced propulsion technologies at a fraction of global costs,” said Suyash Bafna, co founder of Astrophel Aerospace. The compact pump, similar in size to a one litre bottle, generates 100 to 150 horsepower, which is comparable to a family car. The turbopump version is projected to scale up to 500 to 600 horsepower for larger launch vehicles.

The company, which recently secured ₹6.84 crore or around 800,000 dollars in pre seed funding, is preparing to sign a memorandum of understanding with a United States based partner. It is also exploring global collaborations for exports in both space and industries such as oil and gas.

“ISRO’s certification will validate not just our pump, but India’s ability to innovate world class space hardware with global export opportunities,” Bafna added. Co founder Immanuel Louis described the breakthrough as “a stepping stone toward India’s first privately developed gas generator cycle,” calling it the outcome of “years of frugal engineering.”

With India aiming for a 44 billion dollar space economy by 2033, Astrophel’s achievement positions it among the country’s most promising private space technology companies.
