Amazon is developing augmented reality glasses for consumers, according to a report that cites people familiar with the company’s plans. The device, internally known as “Jayhawk,” could launch as early as late 2026 or early 2027, marking Amazon’s entry into the consumer AR market and setting up direct competition with Meta.
The glasses are expected to feature microphones, speakers, a camera, and a full-colour display in one eye. While Amazon has not commented on the report, this project would build on the company’s earlier work with specialised eyewear for delivery drivers. Those glasses, revealed last year, are designed to show turn-by-turn navigation on a small screen to assist drivers along routes and at delivery stops.
Both the delivery and consumer versions are said to use the same display technology. However, the consumer model will reportedly be lighter, sleeker, and more advanced, offering a full-colour display for everyday use. The delivery-worker version could arrive as soon as the second quarter of 2026, with an initial production plan of around 100,000 units.
Amazon’s push into AR hardware positions it against Meta, which is expected to unveil a new generation of AR glasses at its upcoming Connect conference. Earlier this year, Meta also partnered with EssilorLuxottica’s Oakley to develop AI-powered smart glasses. This follows the strong demand for its Ray-Ban Meta line, which has sold millions of units globally since its 2023 release.
If Amazon succeeds, the consumer AR glasses could open a new front in the battle for wearable technology dominance, as both companies race to capture the future of smart eyewear.
