Arm Unveils Lumex Chip Designs to Power AI on Mobile Devices

Arm Holdings on Tuesday announced the launch of its next-generation chip designs, named Lumex, which are optimised for artificial intelligence applications on mobile devices such as smartphones and smartwatches without relying on internet connectivity.

The Lumex family comes in four variants, ranging from highly energy-efficient chips designed for wearables to high-performance versions built to maximise computing power on advanced smartphones. The top-end design is capable of running large AI models directly on devices, eliminating the need for cloud-based computing.

“AI is becoming pretty fundamental to kind of what’s happening, whether it’s kind of real-time interactions or some killer use cases like AI translation,” said Chris Bergey, Senior Vice President and General Manager at Arm. “We’re just seeing (AI) become kind of this expectation.”

The new designs are part of Arm’s Compute Subsystems (CSS) business, which provides handset makers and chip designers with pre-built solutions to speed up integration into their products. This move aligns with Arm’s broader strategy to expand revenue streams from smartphones and other markets by offering more complete chip solutions.

Arm has also revealed plans to increase investment in developing its own chips and has hired several industry experts to support this initiative.

The Lumex designs are tailored for advanced 3-nanometer manufacturing nodes, such as those offered by TSMC. Apple’s latest iPhone chips, also announced on Tuesday, use the same 3-nanometer technology.

Arm will officially showcase the Lumex series at a launch event in China on Wednesday, given that most leading handset manufacturers outside of Apple and Samsung are based there.
