Meta Platforms has revealed details about its new TBD Lab, a specialised unit within its Superintelligence Labs that is dedicated to advancing foundation models. The announcement was made by the company’s chief financial officer Susan Li at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference.
Li explained that the unit currently consists of “a few dozen” highly skilled researchers and engineers. She noted that the name TBD Lab, originally a placeholder, “stuck” as it reflects the evolving and experimental nature of the work. “We conceive of it as sort of a pretty small, few-dozen-people, very talent-dense set of folks,” she said.
The lab is expected to play a central role in Meta’s plans to push AI capabilities to the frontier over the next one to two years.
Last month, reports highlighted that Meta had divided its Superintelligence Labs into four groups: the TBD Lab, a products team working on offerings such as the Meta AI assistant, an infrastructure team, and the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) group, which continues to focus on long-term research.
Meta created Superintelligence Labs earlier this year to streamline its AI strategy, following staff exits and muted reception for its latest open-source model, Llama 4.
Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has personally driven Meta’s AI expansion, pursuing aggressive recruitment by making direct offers to startups and even approaching candidates via WhatsApp with million-dollar compensation packages.
In July, Zuckerberg said: “We’ve established Meta Superintelligence Labs, which includes our foundations, product, and FAIR teams as well as a new lab that is focused on developing the next generation of our models.”
Through the TBD Lab, Meta aims to sharpen its competitive edge in the global AI race by investing in breakthrough model development.
