OpenAI to Launch First In-House AI Chip with Broadcom by 2026

OpenAI is preparing to introduce its first in-house AI chip in collaboration with Broadcom in 2026. The chip will be used exclusively for internal applications and is aimed at optimising operations for models at the scale of ChatGPT.

The move highlights OpenAI’s effort to reduce reliance on Nvidia, which currently dominates the AI chip market. By developing its own hardware, the company seeks to increase efficiency, lower costs, and enhance computing performance for its large-scale models.

Reports indicate that the chip design has already been completed with Broadcom, while TSMC will handle the manufacturing process. The hardware will be dedicated to powering OpenAI’s AI services rather than being sold to outside clients.

Broadcom CEO Hock Tan revealed that the company has received more than 10 billion dollars in AI infrastructure orders from a new customer, widely believed to be OpenAI. The demand for custom silicon solutions underlines the importance of creating chips tailored to the unique requirements of large language models.

Technology giants such as Google, Meta and Amazon have already invested heavily in developing their own AI hardware to meet rising computational needs. OpenAI’s initiative places it in line with these companies while giving it greater control over performance, energy efficiency and design flexibility.

Internal deployment will also allow OpenAI to test new AI architectures, improve processing efficiency and explore advanced AI applications. The chip is expected to help optimise speed, memory use and processing power, giving the company an edge in AI research and development.

The partnership with Broadcom reflects a wider trend across the industry, where closer integration of hardware and software is seen as essential for improving reliability and efficiency. Analysts suggest that such collaborations may reshape AI research infrastructure and global supply chains.

So far, OpenAI and Broadcom have not disclosed detailed technical specifications or exact launch schedules. However, the collaboration demonstrates OpenAI’s commitment to building specialised hardware for future AI models and strengthening its computational foundation for innovation.
