Google Cloud and Qualcomm Expand Partnership to Bring Gemini AI into Cars

Qualcomm Technologies and Google Cloud have announced an expanded partnership to deliver advanced artificial intelligence experiences in vehicles. The collaboration combines Google Cloud’s Automotive AI Agent, powered by Gemini models, with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Digital Chassis solutions to create multimodal AI agents for in-car systems.

According to the companies, this initiative is designed to help automakers build more intelligent and personalised experiences that go beyond basic voice commands, offering conversational and context-aware interactions. By bringing together Google’s AI models and Qualcomm’s hardware and software platforms, carmakers are expected to benefit from faster development cycles and ready-to-use tools for applications such as navigation, entertainment and vehicle controls.

The collaboration uses a hybrid model that blends on-device AI for instant responses with cloud-based AI for more complex tasks. This approach is aimed at giving automakers flexibility while allowing the technology to evolve alongside future upgrades to Google’s Gemini models.

Shiv Venkataraman, vice president of applied AI at Google Cloud, said, “Through our collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, we are putting automakers firmly in the driver’s seat. This collaboration delivers a secure, brand-owned platform that allows automakers to design advanced AI companions capable of multi-modal, multi-lingual, and multi-intent capabilities.”

Nakul Duggal, group general manager of automotive and industrial and embedded IoT at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., added, “Our technology collaboration with Google Cloud marks a significant milestone in unlocking new possibilities for automakers, empowering them to create digitally advanced and personalised experiences for their customers.”

Qualcomm and Google have been working together in the automotive sector since 2016, starting with embedded Android experiences powered by Snapdragon. Their partnership has since grown to include AI-driven cockpit systems, voice control and Android Automotive OS integration.

Both companies highlighted this latest step as part of a wider shift toward software-defined and AI-powered vehicles, which are increasingly considered central to the future of mobility.
