WhatsApp Faces Widespread Outage as Users Report Issues Across App and Website

WhatsApp users across the globe are facing disruptions while trying to access the service. According to an online outage tracking platform, the problems began around 1:10 PM, with reports peaking at 290 by 1:55 PM. Of these, 54 per cent of users cited server connection issues, 24 per cent had trouble with the website, and 22 per cent faced problems within the app.

Frustrated users quickly turned to X to share their concerns and confirm if others were experiencing the same issues. So far, WhatsApp and its parent company Meta have not released any official statement about the outage.

Recurring service disruptions
This is not the first time WhatsApp has faced such challenges. In July, the messaging platform suffered a global outage that prevented millions from sending messages. Both the mobile app and WhatsApp Web were affected, drawing widespread complaints from users.

Possible causes behind outages
Service interruptions on platforms like WhatsApp are often linked to technical issues such as downtime in Domain Name System (DNS) servers or glitches in the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). Misconfigurations in backbone routers can also disrupt services. In some cases, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks may be responsible.

At present, the company has not revealed any technical difficulties, and users must wait for the service to be restored before normal use can resume.

Security updates for Apple devices
Alongside the outage news, WhatsApp recently confirmed that it fixed a critical security flaw affecting Apple devices. The company explained in a blog post that the vulnerability, when combined with an iOS and iPadOS bug, enabled hackers to launch sophisticated attacks and steal data from targeted users.
