Telangana Partners with Deakin University to Establish AI Centre of Excellence

Telangana has taken a major step towards becoming a global hub for responsible and inclusive artificial intelligence by signing a Letter of Intent with Australia’s Deakin University. The agreement was formalised in Hyderabad on September 8, 2025, in the presence of IT and Industries Minister Sridhar Babu Duddilla. It was signed by Deakin University Vice Chancellor Iain Martin and Deputy Secretary to the IT Department Bhavesh Mishra, paving the way for the creation of an AI Centre of Excellence in the state.

Explaining the vision for this initiative, Minister Sridhar Babu said, “By bringing Deakin’s global research excellence together with Telangana’s innovation ecosystem, we are creating a platform where AI will drive healthcare, education, governance and entrepreneurship.” He stressed that skilling, data governance and regulation form the core of Telangana’s AI framework to ensure adoption remains ethical, inclusive and future ready.

The Applied Artificial Intelligence Institute at Deakin University, which is recognised for its research across healthcare, security, manufacturing and advanced technologies, will play a central role in this partnership. Speaking about the collaboration, Iain Martin said, “Deakin is already shaping future-ready graduates through industry-informed programs in AI, cybersecurity and health fields that are in high demand globally.”

Adding to this, IT Secretary Sanjay Kumar noted, “We see AI not just as technology but as a transformative tool for equitable growth. Partnering with Deakin University enhances our ability to build global-standard capabilities in AI, deeply embedded in Telangana’s innovation landscape, driving local strengths to fuel India’s global competitiveness.”

This collaboration reflects Telangana’s commitment to positioning itself as a leader in AI driven innovation, with a strong focus on building sustainable and inclusive solutions that benefit both the local community and global markets.
