DRDO Hands Over Advanced Materials Technologies to Industry Partners

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has transferred three advanced materials technologies to industry partners, marking a key step in strengthening indigenous capabilities in strategic sectors. The announcement was made by the defence ministry on Thursday.

At a recent event, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, Samir V Kamat, handed over the Licensing Agreement for Transfer of Technology (LAToT) documents to the industry partners. The event, held on August 30 at DRDO’s Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL) in Hyderabad, also saw the signing of a memorandum of understanding between DMRL and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau of the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The agreement will enable the bureau to utilise DMRL’s expertise, facilities and technical capabilities to support its activities.

The transferred technologies include the manufacturing of high strength radomes to BHEL, Jagdishpur. This will enable the production of advanced radomes, which serve as protective covers for critical missile sensors, thereby strengthening self-reliance in missile systems.

The second technology involves the production of DMR-1700 steel sheets and plates for defence applications, transferred to JSPL, Angul. This material offers a combination of ultra-high strength and high fracture toughness at room temperature, making it vital for advanced defence platforms.

The third technology, DMR 249A HSLA steel plates, has been transferred to BSP, Bhilai, SAIL, for use in naval applications. These plates meet stringent dimensional, physical and metallurgical standards required for naval vessel construction. HSLA refers to high-strength low-alloy steel, known for its robustness and reliability.

In his address at the event, the DRDO chairman praised the efforts behind the successful research and development that led to these transfers. He acknowledged DMRL’s dedication to promoting industry-research collaboration and driving innovations that will have long-term impact.

According to the ministry, these technology transfers represent a major step forward in indigenous materials development for strategic applications. By working with established industrial players, DRDO ensures that these innovations can be scaled effectively and applied across both defence and commercial sectors.
