Researchers have introduced an AI powered stethoscope that can diagnose life threatening heart conditions in only 15 seconds. The device can identify heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and valvular heart disease with remarkable accuracy.
The stethoscope, a trusted medical tool since 1816, has now received a major technological upgrade. Unlike traditional stethoscopes that only capture body sounds, this AI version can detect subtle changes in heartbeat or blood flow that are often missed by the human ear. It can also perform a quick electrocardiogram at the same time.
Roughly the size of a playing card, the stethoscopewas showcased by researchers from a leading university and healthcare trust in the United Kingdom as part of a project called TRICORDER. It connects to a smartphone app via Bluetooth, where results can be visualised. Using Wi Fi or cellular networks, the data is sent to cloud based AI algorithms regulated by the UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency.
“The statistical performance of these three AI algorithms has been shown to be high and consistent against international external validation studies,” researchers noted in a published paper.
To use the stethoscope device, doctors place it on a patient’s chest. It records both the electrical signals of the heart and the sound of blood flowing through it. The information is then sent to the cloud, where AI trained on data from tens of thousands of people analyses it for early signs of heart problems. Results are quickly delivered back to the connected smartphone.
The British Heart Foundation, which supported the study, highlighted its promising impact. According to their findings, patients tested with AI stethoscopes were “2.33 times more likely to be diagnosed with heart failure, 3.45 times more likely to be diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, and 1.92 times more likely to be diagnosed with heart valve disease in the next 12 months.”
This breakthrough suggests that the future of healthcare may combine traditional tools with artificial intelligence, helping doctors diagnose deadly conditions faster and more accurately.
