Hyderabad cybercrime police have issued a fresh alert after two new online fraud cases caused a loss of nearly Rs 2 lakh to unsuspecting victims. The scams involved fake customer care numbers and unauthorised wallet transactions.
In the first case, a 69-year-old resident of Azampura was cheated while trying to resolve an issue with damaged items ordered online. After searching for customer care details, he found a fake number. Fraudsters posing as company executives contacted him on WhatsApp and convinced his family to download a malicious APK file. The scammers then gained access to their devices, stealing Rs 4,193 from his wife’s account and Rs 98,001 from his daughter-in-law’s account, resulting in a total loss of Rs 1,02,194.
In the second incident, a 37-year-old man from Chandrayangutta lost Rs 1,11,740 through wallet hacking. He had loaded Rs 21.12 lakh into his wallet to purchase gold coins. Although the order was cancelled and refunded, fraudsters later changed his registered mobile number and email ID. Using these changes, they carried out three unauthorised transactions from his wallet balance, leading to the loss.
Police have urged citizens to remain alert and follow safety practices. Their advisory includes avoiding customer care numbers found on search engines, not downloading APK files sent on WhatsApp or Telegram, enabling two-factor authentication on e-wallets, monitoring accounts regularly, and never sharing login details or OTPs. Officials stressed that “vigilance and quick reporting are crucial to prevent further financial damage.”
