The European Union will deploy more satellites in low Earth orbit to boost its resilience against GPS disruptions and will enhance its ability to detect such interference, EU Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius said on Monday.
His comments came after an incident on Sunday when the GPS system on board European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s aircraft was jammed while travelling to Bulgaria. According to an EU spokesperson, Bulgarian authorities believe the disruption was caused by interference linked to Russia.
The move to expand satellite defences is seen as a critical step in safeguarding navigation, security, and communications across the region.
