The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) in Thiruvananthapuram is set to receive the prestigious status of an Institution of National Importance. This marks a key milestone for the institute, which has been at the forefront of research in human spaceflight as India prepares for the Gaganyaan mission.
Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor shared the update on X, stating that the Centre has responded positively to his request to grant this recognition to IIST. The Department of Space has already begun the process of securing the necessary approvals to formalise this decision.
The status of Institution of National Importance is one of the highest recognitions available to an educational institute in India. It will provide IIST with greater autonomy, enhanced funding, and increased academic freedom. This recognition will allow the institute to expand its research activities and further strengthen its role as a vital hub for space science and technology education.
This development is part of India’s broader strategy to build capacity in advanced space education and research. It ensures a strong pipeline of scientists and engineers who will contribute to upcoming missions led by the Indian Space Research Organisation.
The recognition is expected to elevate IIST’s academic standing, open up opportunities for collaboration, and foster innovation in space technology. The move is being welcomed by students, researchers, and policymakers as a crucial step in consolidating India’s growing leadership in space exploration.
With this anticipated upgrade, IIST is set to play a central role in shaping the future of India’s space journey, driving technological progress and scientific excellence for years to come.
