Paytm has issued a clarification after a Google Play notification created confusion about the future of its UPI services. The company assured customers that there will be no disruption in daily UPI payments and only recurring transactions will see a small change.
The fintech firm said reports about its UPI services shutting down were misleading. “There will be no disruption for users when they make UPI payments on Paytm. Both consumer and merchant transactions will remain seamless,” the company stated.
So what is changing? According to Paytm, the update applies only to subscription-based recurring payments such as YouTube Premium or Google One storage. Users who were paying through an old @paytm handle will now need to update it to a new bank-linked handle like @pthdfc, @ptaxis, @ptyes or @ptsbi. For example, if your UPI ID was rajesh@paytm, it will now become rajesh@pthdfc or rajesh@ptsbi depending on the linked bank. One-time payments such as scanning a QR code at a shop or sending money to a friend will remain unaffected.
The change comes as Paytm transitions to new UPI handles after receiving approval from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to operate as a Third Party Application Provider. The company stressed, “This is a simple update to ensure uninterrupted recurring payments, while all other UPI transactions on the app continue without any change.”
The confusion began when Google Play sent a notification that read: “On August 31, @PayTM UPI handles will be deprecated and won’t be an accepted form of payment on Google Play. This is per instructions by the National Payment Corporations of India (NCPI).” With limited context, many users believed Paytm UPI was being switched off entirely. In reality, only recurring subscriptions will need to be updated before 31 August 2025, as the old @paytm handle will stop working for such payments from 1 September.
For users, the options are simple. They can update their subscription mandate with a new Paytm UPI ID, switch to another UPI app like Google Pay or PhonePe, or use debit or credit cards. For everyday payments, no action is required.
Paytm described the notice as “incomplete” and said it caused unnecessary concern. The company emphasised that this is just a backend migration and daily UPI transactions will continue without any change.
