Mulund Resident Duped of Rs 1.3 Crore by Construction Firm

A 66 year old resident of Mulund has filed a complaint against a city based construction company and its partners for allegedly cheating him and his family of Rs 1.3 crore under the guise of providing financial assistance and a flat allotment. Police in Mulund on Saturday booked the two partners, Bharat Prajapati and Bhavit Seth of Marigold Constructions, under IPC section 420 for cheating and are currently searching for them.

According to the FIR, the complainant Narayanan Shankar Iyer, who runs a coaching institute in Mulund, stated that in 2015 he was drawn into a fraudulent scheme promising attractive returns. He alleged that the accused approached him with an investment plan and convinced him with false assurances. Trusting their words, he invested money but later realised he had been deceived.

Iyer claimed that he, along with his wife Rajalakshmi aged 64 and his mother Jayalakshmi aged 89, extended financial help of Rs 2.1 crore to the accused for their business needs. Out of this amount, only Rs 87.5 lakh was returned, leaving Rs 1.3 crore unpaid.

In 2021, to settle the dues, the builders issued an allotment letter for Flat No. 1001, 10th floor, B Wing in their Marigold Miraaya project at Mulund West, assuring possession within three months. However, despite repeated follow ups, neither a registered agreement nor possession was given. The complainant alleged that the allotment letter was only issued to gain trust, without any real intention to deliver the flat. He further said that the accused later stopped responding to his calls and messages.

Police officials confirmed that the accused neither returned the pending money nor handed over the promised property, thereby cheating the family.
