A 27 year old engineer, Pooja Sali from Chalagere in Ranebennur taluk of Haveri district, became a victim of an online scam after receiving a phone call from a man who introduced himself as Rahul Sharma, a junior telecom officer.
The caller alleged that engineer’s identification was linked to a phone number involved in illegal activities in Mumbai and warned her about a possible FIR. Out of fear and in an attempt to prove her innocence, engineer followed his instructions and transferred Rs 11.3 lakh to several bank accounts and UPI IDs.
Later engineer realised that she had been cheated and filed a complaint with the Cybercrime, Economic Offences and Narcotics police station in Haveri. CPI SR Ganachari confirmed that the case is under investigation and is being treated with utmost seriousness.
