Bengaluru’s AI Robot ‘Chewie’ Wins Praise from Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw for Tackling Wet Waste Crisis

Bengaluru, a city struggling with mounting wet waste and overflowing landfills, has found a ray of hope in a local innovation. Biocon Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw has praised an AI-powered robot named Chewie, describing it as a promising solution for managing household garbage.

Sharing a video of the compact machine in action on social media, she wrote, “Wow! Innovation for Bengaluru’s home-produced wet garbage.”

Chewie, developed in Bengaluru, is an AI-driven waste processing unit designed to handle everyday kitchen waste such as food scraps, vegetable peels, and leftovers. It digests the waste and transforms it into usable, nutrient-rich soil within hours. By doing so, it removes the need to store rotting waste in bins and helps address one of the biggest challenges of home waste management: foul odour.

Despite being recognised worldwide as a hub for technology and start-ups, Bengaluru has long faced challenges with its outdated and overburdened waste management system. Chewie offers a sustainable and practical alternative by converting waste into soil that can support urban gardening and farming, creating a circular model that benefits both households and the environment.

Since Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw’s post, Chewie has gained wide attention on social media. Many Bengalureans have praised the concept and expressed interest in adopting the technology for their homes.

One user commented, “Wow. Brilliant! I think he should make these large machines and sell it to municipalities. Municipalities must pay house owners for depositing waste as this waste can be converted to organic manure.” Others, however, expressed scepticism about how artificial intelligence is being used in the robot.

With growing interest and discussions, Chewie is now being seen as a symbol of how innovation can play a vital role in solving one of Bengaluru’s most pressing problems.
