Hitachi Energy India to Invest ₹300 Crore in Transformer Insulation Manufacturing Expansion

Hitachi Energy India Ltd announced on Friday an investment of ₹300 crore to expand its manufacturing capability for high-quality transformer insulation materials, aimed at meeting the rising demand in India and global markets.

In transformers, high-quality insulation material acts as a critical barrier, ensuring safe electricity flow and preventing internal short circuits.

This investment is part of the company’s larger commitment of ₹2,000 crore for India, which was announced in October 2024. According to a company statement, the latest funds will strengthen its insulation and components business by expanding the Mysuru facility in Karnataka.

The Mysuru expansion will double production capacity for extra high voltage class high-quality pressboard and laminated board, essential insulation materials used in power and distribution transformers.

As part of the upgrade, Hitachi Energy India will replace its fossil fuel boiler, transforming the Mysuru site into an ultra-low carbon pressboard facility. The company said this will also include the world’s first fossil-free production line for transformer-grade pressboard.

N Venu, Managing Director and CEO of Hitachi Energy India, said, “With this expansion, we’re proud to support India’s growing grid and renewable energy integration while strengthening the local energy manufacturing ecosystem for a more sustainable future.”

Hitachi Energy India highlighted that demand for electricity in India and globally is growing rapidly, and there remains a significant gap between demand and availability of transformers and their components. The expansion will help bridge this gap by boosting supply across India as well as markets including the UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Indonesia, South Korea and South Africa.

The project is scheduled to be completed by mid-2027 and is aligned with Hitachi Energy’s long-term sustainability goals. The company is a global technology leader in electrification.
