Ascent Solar Technologies, a United States based company known for its lightweight and flexible thin-film photovoltaic solutions, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Star Catcher Industries, a firm building the world’s first space energy grid. The partnership is set to accelerate the adoption of thin-film solar technologies in space while supporting Star Catcher’s vision of delivering power beaming services directly in orbit.
Star Catcher is creating a breakthrough system that can transmit concentrated solar energy to clients’ existing onboard solar arrays without the need for modifications. This innovation enables satellite operators to access between five and ten times more power than conventional methods. By combining this system with Ascent’s ultra-light thin-film solar technology, designed specifically for satellites and spacecraft, the collaboration aims to deliver reliable and advanced energy solutions through a space-based energy grid.
The agreement outlines several areas of cooperation. Both companies will work on power augmentation for Ascent customers using Star Catcher’s beamed energy platform, ensuring steady power supply during high demand periods. The partnership also aims to provide enhanced availability during outages such as eclipses or equipment failures. Plans include offering bundled solutions that combine Ascent’s thin-film technology with Star Catcher’s energy services, along with joint ground and in-space demonstrations to validate and showcase their combined capabilities.
Paul Warley, Chief Executive Officer of Ascent Solar Technologies, said, “Working in tandem with Star Catcher opens up several new possibilities and market opportunities for Ascent. Through this MOU, our companies will be able to tackle joint customer and mission objectives. Beyond that, this marks an incredible chance for our companies to further work toward the proliferation of improved solar solutions in orbit to meet growing demand for next generation power solutions.”
This agreement represents an important step toward advancing the future of space-based solar power. By merging their expertise and technologies, Ascent Solar and Star Catcher aim to create next generation energy systems that ensure uninterrupted operations for satellites and spacecraft while also contributing to the broader growth of space energy infrastructure.
