TransUnion, one of the largest credit reporting agencies in the United States, has confirmed a major data breach that has affected more than 4.4 million people. The incident was revealed in a filing with the Maine attorney general’s office and took place on 28 July 2025. The breach has been linked to unauthorised access of a third-party application used in TransUnion’s consumer support operations.
At first, the company stated that “no credit information was accessed” but did not provide supporting evidence. Later disclosures with the Texas attorney general’s office confirmed that sensitive data including names, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers had been exposed. Experts warn that this information is highly valuable to identity thieves.
When asked for further details, a company spokesperson declined to comment on the type of data exposed, how attackers gained access, or whether any ransom or extortion threats had been made. This silence has led to growing concern among consumer rights groups and cybersecurity professionals.
The breach follows a wave of similar incidents across industries, with several global firms reporting attacks linked to cloud databases. While Google attributed its breach to the hacker group ShinyHunters, it is not yet confirmed whether the TransUnion incident is connected.
With TransUnion managing records of more than 260 million Americans, the breach has raised serious concerns about consumer trust and the responsibility of credit agencies to protect sensitive data. Authorities at both state and federal levels are expected to investigate the matter further.
Security specialists advise affected individuals to freeze their credit reports, monitor financial accounts closely, and remain cautious of phishing attempts that could use stolen personal data. The company has not yet confirmed if it will provide credit monitoring or identity protection services to impacted customers.
