Huawei to Launch Mate XTs Tri-Fold Smartphone Ahead of Global Tech Events

Huawei is preparing to make headlines once again in the foldable smartphone market with the launch of its next-generation tri-fold device, the Mate XTs. The company has confirmed that the new smartphone will be unveiled on 4 September 2025, just a day before IFA begins in Berlin and days ahead of Apple’s iPhone 17 Awe Dropping launch on 9 September.

Samsung is also expected to announce its Galaxy S25 FE around the same period, making Huawei’s timing highly strategic. By launching early, Huawei aims to capture attention before the market is dominated by Apple and Samsung announcements.

The Mate XTs follows the company’s previous innovation, the Mate XT, which was the world’s first triple-folding phone. While most foldable devices have taken either a book-style or compact flip design, Huawei introduced an additional hinge that allowed the phone to open into a wider display, offering a more practical layout than the square-shaped screens of earlier foldables.

One of the most talked-about features is stylus support. A video posted by Huawei executive Richard Yu on Weibo showed him using the M-Pencil with the Mate XTs. This suggests the phone could be positioned not only as a futuristic foldable but also as a productivity tool for tasks such as note-taking, creative work, and multitasking, giving it an edge in the premium device market.

Leaks indicate that the Mate XTs will continue to use Huawei’s Z-style folding mechanism. This design allows the device to function in multiple modes depending on how much of the screen is unfolded. It is expected to feature one continuous OLED display that bends twice, providing a compact smartphone-sized screen when folded and a larger tablet-sized screen when fully expanded. Reports also suggest a new purple colour option in addition to the standard finishes.

Details about the hardware remain limited, but rumours point to a large battery capacity of more than 6,000mAh, which would be required to power the expansive screen and foldable hardware. The device is expected to run on HarmonyOS 5.1. Due to ongoing US sanctions, Huawei is likely to continue using its own processors developed with Chinese semiconductor partner SMIC rather than Qualcomm or MediaTek chips.

Pricing will also be a major focus. The earlier Mate XT launched at close to $3,000, making it one of the most expensive foldable phones in the market. This time, reports suggest Huawei could reduce the price to about $2,000, or roughly ₹1.75 lakh, making it somewhat more accessible while still remaining in the ultra-premium segment.
