A major cyber fraud case has been uncovered in Umaria district, Madhya Pradesh, where criminals created a fake Facebook account using the name and photograph of Collector Dharanendra Kumar Jain. The fraudulent account was used to send friend requests and later messages related to selling goods and money transactions, with the intention of cheating people.
The misuse of the Collector’s identity shows how cybercriminals target trusted public figures to deceive people and gain credibility. After receiving friend requests from the fake account, many users were sent messages about financial dealings and product sales. Suspicion grew when some individuals questioned the authenticity of the account and later realised it was fake.
Collector Dharanendra Kumar Jain has confirmed the existence of the fraudulent account and urged people to block it immediately. He clarified that he has no link with this account and warned citizens not to accept friend requests from it.
The Public Relations Department of Umaria also issued an official statement cautioning the public against engaging with the fake account. The Collector has decided to file a police complaint, and authorities will investigate the case to take strict action against those responsible.
Officials have highlighted that fake accounts are often used not only for financial scams but also to steal personal data. Such fraudulent profiles are part of larger attempts to exploit social media users.
To safeguard against these risks, experts advise users to remain alert and follow basic safety measures such as verifying profiles before accepting requests, avoiding sharing personal or financial details with unknown accounts, strengthening privacy settings, enabling two-factor authentication, and reporting suspicious activity immediately.
The incident serves as a reminder for citizens to be more cautious online and to recognise the growing threat of cyber fraud through fake social media identities.
