L&T Focuses On Young Talent To Drive Future Growth And Innovation

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is reshaping its workforce strategy to attract and retain younger professionals, with a focus on innovation, agility, and long-term relevance. Chairman and Managing Director SN Subrahmanyan highlighted that the company is placing new emphasis on a generation of employees who bring digital fluency and adaptability to help the conglomerate transform.

“We’re leveraging a new generation of employees who bring fresh perspectives,” Subrahmanyan said, noting that their skills are essential as L&T navigates changes across infrastructure, technology, and emerging sectors.

The company is actively redesigning its leadership pipeline to include younger, tech-savvy professionals capable of addressing dynamic market conditions. This shift aligns with L&T’s broader business transformation strategy.

Business Portfolio Restructuring

The engineering and infrastructure giant, valued at ₹4.85 lakh crore, is undergoing a major restructuring. L&T has exited legacy businesses such as ports, airports, and electrical switchgear, while investing in fast-growing areas like semiconductors, green hydrogen, data centres, and real estate.

Subrahmanyan acknowledged that younger professionals are drawn to technology-driven sectors such as IT, retail, and digital services, more than to traditional construction roles. “Construction work doesn’t appeal to younger generations the way it used to,” he said, stressing the importance of making core engineering roles more attractive through purpose-driven projects and innovation.

Developing Future Leaders

To nurture talent, L&T is focusing on leadership development, internal mobility, and digital upskilling. Initiatives include rotational assignments and exposure to strategic projects to prepare employees for larger roles.

The company continues to follow its business philosophy of “grow to sell, sell to grow,” which means scaling businesses until they are ready for monetisation or exiting underperforming units to reallocate capital. Past divestments include the sale of its electrical switchgear business to Schneider Electric and renewable energy assets to ReNew Power.

L&T is now building growth in frontier areas such as real estate, semiconductors, green energy, and data centres. Its real estate arm has already developed more than 75 million square feet of residential and commercial projects, with plans to expand to 100 million square feet.

Balancing Tradition And Transformation

Subrahmanyan’s comments on younger talent also come against the backdrop of broader debates on work culture. Earlier this year, he faced criticism for suggesting longer workweeks, including Sundays, but L&T clarified that his intent was to encourage commitment to national progress.

“At L&T, nation-building is at the core of our mandate,” the company stated. “We believe this is India’s decade, and it demands collective dedication and effort.”

By integrating younger professionals with experienced leadership, L&T aims to remain competitive and relevant in a rapidly changing global economy.
