Bajaj Auto Resumes Supply of Chetak Electric Scooter After Overcoming Magnet Shortage

Bajaj Auto has resumed the supply of its electric scooter, Chetak, to dealerships after resolving a global shortage of rare earth magnets that had disrupted production in recent months.

The company restarted production and deliveries on August 20, earlier than anticipated, bringing much-needed relief to customers who had been waiting for their scooters.

Eric Vas, President of Bajaj Auto’s Urbanite business unit, confirmed that demand for the Chetak continues to remain strong and that the production line has now stabilised. “We are scaling up output to meet rising demand while ensuring the highest standards of quality,” he said in a statement issued on Friday.

Rajiv Bajaj, Managing Director of Bajaj Auto, also shared that shipments of light rare earth magnets had started arriving a few weeks ago, enabling production to ramp up once again. With this improvement, the company expects to raise output significantly from about 15,000 units in August to nearly 40,000 units in September, aligning with the upcoming festive season.

Earlier this year, Bajaj Auto had cautioned that the shortage of rare earth magnets, largely driven by China’s export restrictions, could force the company to temporarily halt production in August. However, with supply chains showing signs of stability, the company is now focused on building adequate inventory to meet the festive season’s demand.

The resumption of supplies marks a significant recovery for Bajaj Auto’s electric vehicle business. It also ensures that the popular Chetak scooter will once again be widely available across all dealerships ahead of the peak sales period.
