OpenAI to Open First India Office in New Delhi as ChatGPT Usage Surges

OpenAI is set to establish its first office in India later this year, with New Delhi chosen as the location. The move marks a significant milestone for the company in its second-largest market after the United States.

Over the past year, ChatGPT’s weekly active users in India have grown four times. The country now ranks among the top five global developer markets and leads in student adoption of the technology.

“The level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible,” said Sam Altman, Chief Executive Officer of OpenAI. “India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader—amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission.”

Pragya Misra, who has been managing public policy and partnerships for OpenAI in India since last year, is currently the company’s only representative in the country.

The company has already introduced several initiatives aimed at Indian users. These include ChatGPT Go at ₹399 per month with UPI payment options, OpenAI Academy in collaboration with MeitY, expanded Indic language support in GPT-5, and a new Study Mode designed for learners.

Welcoming the development, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “With strong investments in digital public infrastructure, AI talent, and enterprise-scale solutions, India is uniquely positioned to drive the next wave of AI-led transformation. We welcome OpenAI’s partnership in advancing this vision.”

OpenAI’s entry is expected to further accelerate India’s role in the global AI landscape, strengthening its position as a hub for innovation, developers, and students.
