Meta has entered into a major agreement with Google to spend more than $10 billion on cloud services, according to two people aware of the matter.
The agreement will run for six years, said the sources, who requested anonymity as the terms are confidential. The deal was earlier reported by a common news source.
For Google, this marks another step in its effort to secure large-scale cloud contracts as it competes with Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure in the cloud infrastructure market. Earlier this year, Google secured a significant deal with OpenAI, which had previously relied heavily on Microsoft’s Azure platform.
In its July update, Alphabet reported that Google Cloud generated $2.83 billion in operating income on revenue of $13.6 billion during the second quarter. The unit, which also includes productivity software subscriptions along with infrastructure, recorded revenue growth of 32 per cent, surpassing the overall company’s growth rate of 13.8 per cent.
Meta’s agreement with Google is largely focused on artificial intelligence infrastructure, one of the sources said. Meta highlighted in its recent earnings report that total expenses for 2025 are projected to be between $114 billion and $118 billion. The company is investing heavily in artificial intelligence talent and infrastructure, developing its Llama family of models and incorporating AI across its wide range of services.
Although Meta and Google have long been rivals in the online advertising market, Meta is seeking access to as much cloud infrastructure as possible. While the company operates its own data centres, it has also committed to using services from Amazon and Microsoft.
