eBay Chooses Bengaluru for First Global Capability Centre in India

American e-commerce giant eBay has chosen Bengaluru over Hyderabad to establish its first Global Capability Centre in India, citing the city’s high-quality and diverse talent pool. Mazen Rawashdeh, SVP and Chief Technology Officer at eBay, shared this ahead of the centre’s unveiling.

“The talent in India, in general, is amazing. We were debating between Bengaluru and Hyderabad, and we decided on Bengaluru as the quality and diversity of the talent is really attractive here. We want to open and expand our presence with the dev centre and attract top talent. It’s a world-class tier-1 tech dev centre for us,” said Rawashdeh.

The new 65,000-square-foot office will host various functions, including technology and engineering, AI and machine learning, applied research, product development, product management, and data analytics. The centre is expected to house more than 300 engineers and will serve as a strategic technology innovation hub similar to eBay’s centres in the United States and China.

Rawashdeh clarified that the centre is not intended to expand eBay’s business in India. “Us coming to India at this point is not a business strategy. It’s not to expand eBay’s business in India. We never exited India. We stayed here, but shrunk the footprint, and looked at supporting and augmenting the functions outside of India. This time the strategy is completely different,” he said.

Unlike a traditional support centre, the Bengaluru GCC will build, incubate, and architect services and functions including engineering, design, and product development, operating with a semi-autonomous team.

The company is also in discussions with the government and universities to create strong partnerships for research and development. Rawashdeh added, “We intend to build those relationships, especially with the universities from a research and development angle. That would be a great pipeline to not only bring talent to the organization, but also leverage the tremendous experience and knowledge with the PhD students and do joint research with them.”

With this move, eBay aims to strengthen its global technology capabilities while tapping into India’s growing pool of skilled engineers and researchers.
