OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who became a father earlier this year, has shared his views on how artificial intelligence could help families in the future. Speaking on a podcast with an entrepreneur, Altman described parenthood as “amazing” and encouraged more people to consider having children. He also highlighted declining birth rates as a “real problem” and said that building families and communities should become a greater priority in the coming years.
“I think it’s pretty clear that family and community are two of the things that make us the happiest, and I hope we will turn back to that,” Altman said.
Altman believes artificial intelligence, especially the still-hypothetical artificial general intelligence or AGI, could play a key role in supporting families. He explained, “AGI will allow for a world where people have more abundance, more time, more resources, and potential, and ability.” In such a future, daily life would become less stressful, society would be wealthier, and families would have more support to thrive.
The CEO hopes that family and community “will become far more important in a post-AGI world.”
Reflecting on his own early months as a father, Altman described the experience as “the most important and meaningful and fulfilling thing I could imagine doing.” He also admitted to being “extremely kid-pilled,” a tech term for someone who is fully enthusiastic about having children. During the newborn stage, he said he was “constantly” asking his company’s chatbot for advice, showing that even childcare can be a use case for AI.
Altman also joked on a podcast that his children will never outsmart the AI systems he helped build. “My kids will never be smarter than AI. They will grow up vastly more capable than we grew up, and able to do things that we cannot imagine, and they’ll be good at using AI,” he said. He emphasized that learning to work with intelligent systems will be as essential as learning to read or write, and he plans to teach these skills to his children early.
Silicon Valley leaders like Elon Musk have also spoken about the importance of families, warning that declining birth rates could be a serious challenge for society.
