Foxconn and SoftBank to Manufacture Data Centre Equipment in Ohio for Stargate Project

Foxconn announced on Monday that it will partner with Japan’s SoftBank to manufacture data centre equipment at its former electric vehicle plant in Ohio. The move is part of the Stargate project, which aims to strengthen artificial intelligence infrastructure in the United States.

Foxconn Chairman Young Liu confirmed that SoftBank has purchased the Lordstown facility. He added that Foxconn will continue to operate the site through a new venture jointly established with SoftBank.

Earlier this month, Foxconn revealed it had agreed to sell the factory and its machinery for 375 million dollars but did not disclose the buyer at the time. The confirmation now ties the deal directly to the Stargate project.

Stargate is a large-scale collaboration between SoftBank, OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, and Oracle. The initiative was first announced in January by United States President Donald Trump, who stated that the companies involved would invest up to 500 billion dollars.

Young Liu explained that preparations for the project have been underway for more than six months. He emphasised the importance of timely execution, saying, “We understand that for this project, the first priorities are power, venue, and timing — it cannot be delayed for too long. Taking all these factors into account, we believe Ohio is a very suitable location, and SoftBank shares this view.”

SoftBank has not yet provided any comment on the development.

The new partnership highlights Ohio’s growing role as a hub for advanced technology projects and further strengthens the collaboration between global technology leaders working on the next stage of artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure.
