Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronics major and the largest manufacturer of iPhones, has begun operations at its new factory in Bengaluru with small scale production of the iPhone 17, according to people familiar with the matter. This facility is the company’s second largest manufacturing unit globally and its biggest outside China. The factory is located in Devanahalli near Bengaluru and is being developed with an investment of 2.8 billion US dollars, around 25,000 crore rupees.
A source confirmed, “Foxconn Bengaluru unit has commenced operation with the production of iPhone 17. This is in addition to the production of iPhone 17 at its Chennai unit.”
Apple and Foxconn did not respond to queries regarding the development. Production at the plant had earlier faced disruption when hundreds of Chinese engineers left abruptly. The company has since addressed the shortfall by bringing in experts from other regions, including Taiwan.
Multiple sources indicate that Apple plans to significantly expand iPhone production, targeting 60 million units this year compared with around 35 to 40 million units in 2024 to 2025. In the year ending March 31, 2025, Apple assembled 60 percent more iPhones in India, worth an estimated 22 billion US dollars.
Apple’s Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook, following the company’s financial results on July 31, highlighted that a majority of iPhones sold in the United States in June 2025 were manufactured in India. During the second quarter earnings call, he confirmed that all iPhones sold in the US during the June quarter would be shipped from India.
Analysis by a research firm showed that iPhone sales in the US reached 75.9 million units in 2024. With exports from India recorded at 3.1 million units in March, the data suggests that shipments will need to double either by adding new production capacity or redirecting devices originally meant for the domestic market.
Within India, Apple’s supplies grew by 21.5 percent year on year to 5.9 million units in the first half of 2025. The iPhone 16 was the highest shipped model during this period across the country.
