Meta Plans to Launch Hypernova Smart Glasses with Display at Lower Price Point

Meta is preparing to launch its first smart glasses with a display next month, with fresh details now emerging about the expected pricing. According to a report from a common source, the upcoming glasses, internally known as Hypernova, will be priced lower than the one thousand dollar range that was earlier anticipated.

Meta already sells its Ray Ban smart glasses for around two hundred to four hundred dollars. During the development of Hypernova, however, the company initially considered a price starting at one thousand dollars, with discussions suggesting it could even reach as high as one thousand four hundred dollars.

At that earlier pricing, the new glasses would have cost more than the base and Plus models of the iPhone 16. Reports now suggest that Meta has adjusted its strategy and plans to sell Hypernova starting at around eight hundred dollars.

The reduction in pricing is believed to be a result of Meta’s decision to accept smaller profit margins in order to encourage stronger demand for its new product. However, styling choices and prescription lenses could still push the overall cost higher.

Hypernova is being described as a step toward the development of fully functional augmented reality glasses. The upcoming model is expected to include a small screen placed on the right lens for mini applications and notifications. It will reportedly be controllable through a neural wrist accessory, similar to the one that appeared in Meta’s earlier Orion prototypes.

Reports also describe how the Hypernova glasses will operate. On startup, they are expected to display a boot screen showing the Meta logo alongside those of partner companies such as Qualcomm. The home screen will present circular icons in a horizontal layout, a design similar to Apple products and Meta’s Quest mixed reality headset.

The glasses are expected to feature dedicated applications for taking and viewing photos as well as for navigation through maps. They could also display notifications from mobile applications, including Meta services such as Messenger and WhatsApp.

Like other Meta devices, Hypernova will reportedly run on a customised version of Android. However, at launch, there will not be an app store available for the glasses.

With Hypernova, Meta is taking its next step toward making augmented reality glasses a mainstream product, while keeping pricing more competitive than initially planned.
