Raphael Domjan Reaches 8,224 Metres In SolarStratos Flight, Nearing World Record

Swiss aviator Raphael Domjan has come close to breaking the world record for the highest altitude in a solar powered aircraft, reaching 8,224 metres in his SolarStratos plane. The flight, which took off from Sion Airport in southwestern Switzerland, lasted four hours and marked a significant step towards his ambition of surpassing the 10,000 metre mark.

Domjan, known as an eco explorer for his dedication to sustainable aviation, has long aimed to push the boundaries of solar flight. The current record of 9,235 metres was set in 2010 by Swiss pilot Andre Borschberg in the Solar Impulse. Domjan hopes not only to break that record but also to match the cruising altitude of commercial jets, an especially challenging goal given the limitations of flying solely on solar energy.

Before this latest attempt, Domjan achieved a SolarStratos record of 6,589 metres during a practice flight on July 31. A follow up attempt last Friday was cut short due to poor thermal conditions, which are crucial for gaining altitude. Choosing to conserve battery power, he returned without making a full run. This week, improved weather helped him set a new height record for his aircraft.

The SolarStratos is powered by solar panels mounted on its 24.8 metre wings, which charge the onboard batteries during flight. This allows the aircraft to recharge fully while airborne, making it a unique innovation in sustainable aviation.

Speaking about his goal of reaching 10,000 metres, Domjan said it will require persistence and determination. For him, the mission is not just about breaking records but about demonstrating the possibilities of green aviation and inspiring future developments in eco friendly flight.
