Apple is preparing to roll out a major upgrade to Siri in 2026, introducing a powerful new App Intents feature that will allow users to control various apps using only their voice. The upgrade will enable Siri to perform tasks such as interacting on social media, browsing shopping platforms, and making in-app changes with high precision.
The company first showcased the revamped Siri during its WWDC 2024 event, but the update missed the September iPhone launch and faced several delays. Sources now confirm that Apple plans to release the new Siri next spring, transforming it into what is described as the “hands-free controller of your iPhone.”
With App Intents, users will be able to instruct Siri to carry out actions like finding a specific photo, editing it, and sending it, as well as more complex commands such as commenting on an Instagram post, scrolling through a shopping app, and adding items to their cart. This update will allow Siri to function inside apps in the same way a user would, navigating and executing commands within their interfaces.
Apple’s global data operations team has made perfecting the App Intents feature a top priority. However, engineers are facing challenges in ensuring the feature works seamlessly across a wide range of apps and meets the accuracy required for sensitive use cases. There are particular concerns about allowing Siri to operate in critical areas like health and banking apps, where mistakes could have serious consequences.
Due to these challenges, Apple does not plan to make the feature available for all apps immediately. Instead, initial testing is being conducted with a selection of third-party apps, including Uber, AllTrails, Threads, Temu, Amazon, YouTube, Facebook, WhatsApp, and various games, alongside Apple’s own apps. The company is also considering restrictions or complete exclusions for Siri’s functionality in sensitive categories such as banking.
