ChatGPT Plus Users Voice Concerns Over GPT 5 As OpenAI Makes Changes To Win Them Back

The recent launch of GPT 5 has sparked dissatisfaction among ChatGPT Plus subscribers, who claim the new model feels less capable and more restrictive compared to earlier versions. Many users have criticised GPT 5 for offering shorter and less engaging responses, describing the update as a cost cutting move.

The situation worsened when OpenAI removed access to older models such as GPT 4o, o3, o3 Pro and o4 mini for Free and Plus tier users. While Pro and Team subscribers could still access these through legacy settings, Plus members lost that option.

Under the new arrangement, GPT 5 offers Plus subscribers 80 messages every three hours for the standard model and 200 messages per week for the GPT 5 Thinking model. Before the change, users had higher allowances across several models, including 100 messages per week for o3, 700 messages per week for o4 mini high, 2,100 messages per week for o4 mini, and 80 messages every three hours for GPT 4o.

Many felt the reduced limits marked a clear downgrade, particularly as the context window for Plus users remains at 32,000 tokens, significantly smaller than the 128,000 tokens available to higher tier subscribers. A larger context window allows the AI to process and remember much longer text in one conversation.

The rollout led to widespread criticism on social media platforms, where numerous users threatened to cancel their Plus subscriptions. In response, OpenAI moved quickly to address the backlash.

The company has now doubled the GPT 5 rate limit for Plus members to 160 messages every three hours and restored access to GPT 4o via legacy settings. Additionally, chief executive Sam Altman announced plans to raise the GPT 5 Thinking model limit to 1,000 messages per week, aiming to give users more flexibility and functionality.
