A social media account linked to Chinese state media has warned that Nvidia’s H20 artificial intelligence chips pose security risks for China. The concerns come after Beijing questioned whether these chips contained hidden backdoor access.
The account, Yuyuan Tantian, affiliated with a major state broadcaster, stated in a WeChat article that the H20 chips are “neither environmentally friendly, nor advanced, nor safe” and that consumers have the choice not to purchase them. The H20 chips were designed specifically for the Chinese market after the United States imposed export restrictions on advanced AI chips in late 2023.
The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump initially banned sales of the H20 chips to China in April during heightened trade tensions, but the ban was lifted in July. On 31 July, China’s cyberspace regulator met with Nvidia to discuss potential backdoor vulnerabilities, which could allow bypassing of normal security measures or enable functions like “remote shutdown.”
Nvidia has denied these allegations, stating that its products contain no “backdoors” for remote access or control. The company repeated this position when responding to the latest article from Yuyuan Tantian.
This is not the first time Nvidia has faced criticism from Chinese state media. Earlier this month, another major outlet urged the company to provide “convincing security proofs” to address user concerns and restore trust in the Chinese market.
The debate over the H20 chips reflects ongoing tensions in the technology sector between China and the United States, with issues of cybersecurity, product reliability, and environmental standards at the forefront of bilateral trade discussions.
