WhatsApp: A Simple Guide to Creating Polls in Group Chats on Android and iOS

Making group decisions on WhatsApp can often be messy when there is no clear conclusion. To make this easier, WhatsApp introduced a poll feature in 2022, allowing users to put matters to a vote quickly. Here is how you can create and use polls on the platform in a few simple steps.

Creating Polls on WhatsApp for Android

  • Open WhatsApp and select the group chat where you want to create a poll.
  • Tap on Attach, represented by the paper clip icon, and choose the Poll option.
  • Under Question, type the question you want to ask. The question can be up to 255 characters.
  • Under Options, enter up to 12 possible answers, each limited to 100 characters.
  • To change the order of the options, tap and hold the Reorder icon, which looks like four horizontal lines, and slide the option up or down.
  • By default, users can vote for multiple answers. To allow only one answer per voter, turn off the Allow multiple answers option.
  • Tap the Send icon, shown as a paper aeroplane, to post your poll.
  • Make sure push notifications are enabled on your device to receive updates on votes.

Creating Polls on WhatsApp for iOS

  • Open WhatsApp and select the desired chat.
  • Tap the Attach icon, represented by a plus sign, and then choose Poll.
  • Type your question in the Question field.
  • Enter up to 12 poll options.
  • To reorder options, tap and hold the Drag Item icon, shown as three horizontal lines, and move it up or down.
  • Switch off Allow multiple answers if you want participants to vote for only one option.Tap Send to create your poll.

Responding to a Poll

  • To vote, tap on the option or options you choose.
  • To remove your vote from an option, tap it again.
    If multiple answers are disabled, tapping a new option will deselect your previous choice.

Viewing Poll Results
To see poll results, open the chat containing the poll and tap View votes. This will show the number of people who have voted and their selections.
