Best Buy to Expand India Tech Centre Workforce by Over 40 Percent

US electronics retailer Best Buy will increase the workforce at its India technology centre by more than 40 percent in the coming months, according to a senior company executive. The move comes as more global companies establish operations in the country to tap into its expanding talent base.

Best Buy opened its first technology centre, also known as a global capability centre, in Bengaluru last year. The centre currently has around 350 employees working in areas such as data and artificial intelligence. The company plans to grow this number to between 500 and 550.

Global capability centres, which were once primarily low-cost outsourcing units, have transformed in recent years. They now provide a wide range of support for their parent companies, including daily operations, finance, and research and development.

“We will be hiring across the functions … We will be doing a lot of digital and tech (hiring),” said Nithya Subramanian, senior director data and AI COE, speaking on the sidelines of an event in Chennai.

Best Buy, known for selling electronics including laptops, kitchen appliances, and cameras, is currently hiring for positions such as AI engineer, software engineer, and product manager in India, according to its LinkedIn listings.

“Even if you look at the global strength, I think we are growing leaps and bounds in India,” Subramanian added, highlighting that the Bengaluru office is Best Buy’s largest technology hub and is bigger than any of its three technology hubs in the United States.

The retailer operates more than 1,000 stores in the United States and Canada, employing over 85,000 people, but it does not have retail operations in India.

Best Buy’s India expansion comes as many other global companies are also increasing their presence in the country. Last month, it was reported that Costco Wholesale is planning to open its first India global capability centre.

The domestic market for global capability centres is projected to grow to as much as 105 billion dollars by 2030, rising from 64.6 billion dollars in the fiscal year 2024, according to an industry report.
