Murata Enters Indian Market with New Electronics Manufacturing Unit in Chennai

Japanese electronics company Murata Manufacturing has officially made its entry into the Indian market by opening a manufacturing facility in Chennai. This marks the company’s first venture in India and is part of its strategic global expansion in the electronics space.

Located at Origins by Mahindra World City in Chennai, the new plant is owned and operated by Murata Electronics India, a fully owned subsidiary of the Japanese parent company. The facility has been set up with a total investment of Rs 1,000 crore. Murata confirmed that commercial production began in July 2025.

The Chennai unit will focus on the manufacturing of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), essential components widely used in smartphones, laptops, wearables, automotive electronics, and several industrial applications. These MLCCs are known for their ability to store electrical energy, making them critical to the functioning of compact electronic devices.

Murata stated that its decision to invest in India aligns with the country’s growing role as a global electronics manufacturing hub. By setting up a local production base, the company aims to cater to the increasing demand for MLCCs both within India and across global markets.

With its new presence in India, Murata also plans to work closely with local partners and stakeholders to strengthen its supply chain and support the Make in India initiative.

Murata Manufacturing is headquartered in Kyoto, Japan, and operates more than 100 subsidiaries and affiliates globally. The company specialises in electronic components, including capacitors, sensors, communication modules, and power supplies.
