Google DeepMind has introduced Genie 3, a powerful new AI model designed to generate interactive 3D environments using only text prompts. This latest version marks a major leap forward in virtual world creation, offering users an immersive experience that lasts several minutes with stable graphics and real-time interaction.
Genie 3 allows users to input a description such as “a forest during a thunderstorm” and instantly generates a playable 3D space. The experience runs smoothly at 24 frames per second and maintains a consistent 720p resolution throughout. Unlike its predecessor Genie 2, which supported just 10 to 20 seconds of interaction, Genie 3 extends the experience to a few minutes.
A standout feature of Genie 3 is its improved visual memory. It remembers object placements within the environment, allowing users to leave an area and return to find everything as they left it. Google states that this visual memory lasts up to one minute, a capability missing from most earlier models.
Genie 3 is part of a category of AI known as world models. These models are not just for creating static visuals but are designed to simulate dynamic environments that respond to user actions. They have potential use cases in robotics, gaming, simulations, and education.
Users can make changes to the environment during interaction, such as adding characters or changing weather conditions. The model also supports basic movement controls, enhancing the sense of exploration and engagement.
However, Genie 3 is not yet available to the public. Google has stated that the model will first be tested by a small group of artists before any wider rollout. The company also notes that while the model is more consistent than previous versions, it cannot accurately replicate real-world geographic locations, and readable text will only appear if specified in the original prompt.
Multi-agent interactions are still under development, and the model currently offers only a limited range of actions. Google is also focused on addressing the safety and responsibility challenges that come with such advanced technology.
