BMC Plans to Deploy 200 Engineers for Versova Dahisar Link Road Under Coastal Road Phase II

As Phase II of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP) gains momentum, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed appointing nearly 200 engineers to manage the upcoming Versova Dahisar Link Road (VDLR). This move aims to ease the pressure on the Bridges Department, which is already stretched thin due to several ongoing infrastructure projects, including the Goregaon Mulund Link Road, the Madh Versova bridge, and multiple bridge reconstructions.

The proposal is currently awaiting administrative clearance from Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani.

The 20 kilometre Versova Dahisar Link Road is estimated to cost ₹16,621 crore and is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion across Mumbai. Acting on directives from the state government, the BMC is fast-tracking work on this second phase of the coastal road initiative.

A senior civic official stated, “To ensure efficient implementation of MCRP Phase II, engineers from the roads, sewerage, and water supply departments will be assigned to the project. They will be responsible for contractor supervision, daily progress tracking, and handling technical matters. This personnel pool will also support other upcoming infrastructure projects.”

For Phase I of the coastal road project, covering the stretch from Marine Drive to the Bandra Worli Sea Link, the BMC had already created a dedicated department. Officials assigned to that phase will continue their duties as the department remains responsible for its maintenance and associated development road work, including the creation of open spaces and walkways.

Phase II of the MCRP includes plans for underground tunnels, a cable-stayed bridge, and vehicular interchanges to boost connectivity between the northern and southern parts of Mumbai. Civil construction is expected to begin in the first week of September with machinery mobilisation and casting yard set-up.

The tunnel boring work connecting Mindspace in Malad to Charkop is scheduled to begin next year, with the boring machine set to arrive early in the year. The VDLR will also link to the Goregaon Mulund Link Road, enhancing east-west travel efficiency in the city.
