India Needs to Triple Satellites in Orbit Within Three Years, Says ISRO Chief

ISRO Chairman V Narayanan has said that India must nearly triple its number of active satellites in space over the next three years. Currently, India has 55 satellites in orbit, and the growing demand for space-based services requires that this number increases significantly.

Speaking at ‘The GP Birla Memorial Lecture on Indian Space Programme Accomplishments, Challenges and Future Perspectives’ in Hyderabad, Narayanan said, “Right now, 55 satellites are in orbit serving the common man in this country. And in another three years, this number has to become almost three times. The requirement is huge. The demand is so much that we have to build satellites. We are working towards that.”

He said that by 2040, India will be on par with any other leading nation in the world in terms of space technology, application areas and infrastructure.

Narayanan also shared that ISRO has 12 launch vehicle missions planned for this year. Among them is the NASA ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission, which will be launched by India’s GSLV F16 rocket on July 30.

Discussing future goals, the ISRO chief revealed that India plans to place the first module of its own space station in orbit by 2028 and aims to complete the space station by 2035. “Now we are working on building our own space station. We are going to have our own Chandrayaan landing,” he added.

He also spoke about ongoing reforms in the space sector. According to Narayanan, ISRO is shifting from a service-based model to one that actively seeks business opportunities.
