When people think of modern transport hubs in India, cities like Mumbai, Delhi or Bengaluru usually come to mind. But breaking that pattern, India’s first privately managed railway station with an airport-style experience is located in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
Rani Kamlapati Railway Station, earlier known as Habibganj Railway Station, is the country’s first railway station redeveloped and managed under a Public Private Partnership model. The redevelopment was carried out by the Bansal Group in partnership with the Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the station on November 15, 2021. It was renamed in honour of Gond queen Rani Kamlapati, and the station code was changed from HBJ to RKMP.
As part of Indian Railways’ plan to modernise major stations across the country, Rani Kamlapati Station has been upgraded to offer an airport-like experience. Passengers now have access to a large concourse area, modern waiting lounges, high-tech security systems, and energy-efficient infrastructure powered by solar panels. The station also features food courts and branded retail outlets, offering more comfort and convenience for travellers.
While Indian Railways still owns the station, day-to-day operations and maintenance are managed by the private developer. This allows for improved services while keeping ownership with the government.
The transformation of Rani Kamlapati Station highlights the larger efforts made by Indian Railways over the last decade under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. With 100 percent electrification, better platforms, and a strong focus on passenger facilities, Indian Railways is working towards delivering more efficient and comfortable travel experiences.
After the success of this model in Bhopal, similar redevelopment plans are underway for stations like New Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Mumbai CST, among others.
