Following bilateral talks between the two nations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared on Friday that India had agreed to provide the Maldives with a line of credit worth Rs 4,850 crore.
Furthermore, PM Modi declared that the two countries have begun to negotiate a free trade agreement.
“We have decided to promote renewable energy. India will share its experience in this sector with Maldives. I would like to congratulate you all on this historic event and thank you for the warm welcome,” said PM Modi.
At President Muizzu’s request, PM Modi is traveling to the Maldives, where he will serve as the honored guest for the 60th Independence Day celebrations.
Following a period of tension, the prime minister’s visit signaled a significant improvement in India-Maldives relations.
According to him, mutual trust is demonstrated by cooperation in the areas of defense and security.
Muizzu and several of his government’s top officials welcomed Modi when he arrived at the Velena international airport this morning, demonstrating how much importance Male placed on the visit.
Given that Muizzu, who is believed to be close to China, took office in the island nation in November 2023 on the strength of a “India Out” campaign, the improvement in bilateral relations gains significance.
The ties were severely strained as a result of his policies during the first few months of his presidency. He has called on Indian armed men to leave his country within hours of taking his oath. India then substituted civilians for the personnel.
In order to maintain and run an aircraft and two helicopters used for rescue and humanitarian missions, Indian military troops were sent to the Maldives.
It is generally accepted that New Delhi’s persistent efforts, which included helping the island nation deal with its economic problems, contributed to the improvement of relations.
Under the past administrations in Male, the Maldives, one of India’s most important maritime neighbors in the Indian Ocean Region, saw an increase in bilateral cooperation overall, especially in the fields of security and defense.
