Meta appoints Shengjia Zhao as the Chief Scientist of Superintelligence Lab

Shengjia Zhao, an AI researcher who joined Meta Platforms Inc. from OpenAI in June, has been appointed chief scientist for the social media company’s new superintelligence AI group by Mark Zuckerberg.

Zhao was a member of the group that created the initial iteration of ChatGPT, the well-known chatbot from OpenAI. He will assist in leading Meta’s well-known team, which is working to create new AI models that are on par with or more capable than humans at certain activities. Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI who joined Meta in June as Chief AI Officer, will be Zhao’s supervisor.

In order to create new models and stay ahead of competitors like OpenAI and Google in the competition for supremacy in AI, Meta has been investing heavily on hiring AI specialists. For months, the business has been searching for a group chief scientist. In the last two months, Zhao is one of over a dozen former OpenAI workers who have joined Meta’s AI division.

“Shengjia co-founded the new lab and has been our lead scientist from day one,” Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, wrote in a post announcing the news on Threads. “Now that our recruiting is going well and our team is coming together, we have decided to formalize his leadership role.”

Zhao was a key researcher on OpenAI’s first reasoning model, o1, which has contributed to the popularity of a wave of similar so-called “chain-of-thought” systems from labs like DeepSeek, Google, and others. Zhao was also a co-author on the original ChatGPT research article. He was identified as one of the project’s more than 20 “foundational researchers.”

According to a person familiar with the situation, Yann LeCun, another AI researcher who has been with Meta for more than ten years and is currently the head scientist, will remain with the firm as the chief scientist of an internal AI research group called FAIR. They added that he will report to Wang.
