Google and OpenAI have clinched gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad for Artificial Intelligence (IMO-AI), demonstrating the advanced problem-solving capabilities of their language models.
The competition, organized to benchmark AI systems against top mathematical challenges, included teams from leading global research labs. Google’s DeepMind and OpenAI’s GPT-based models performed exceptionally well, solving complex mathematical problems typically reserved for human Olympiad contestants.
“This is a powerful demonstration of how far AI has come in terms of reasoning and logic,” said Dr. David Silver, a senior researcher at DeepMind. “Solving Olympiad-level problems requires not just computation, but deep understanding—a threshold we’re now crossing.”
OpenAI’s team also noted the significance of the win. “This success shows how mathematical reasoning can be taught to large language models and how these skills can scale to complex domains,” said an OpenAI spokesperson.
The IMO-AI event is one of the few global stages where AI is tested on rigorous, abstract mathematical reasoning instead of language prediction or image recognition. Participating models were evaluated on their ability to solve proofs, theorems, and multi-step logic problems.
Experts believe this milestone will drive new research in AI-powered education tools, scientific computing, and formal verification systems.
