Rapidus Verifies Japan’s First 2nm Chip Prototype

Rapidus Corporation has successfully verified Japan’s first 2-nanometer (2nm) semiconductor prototype, positioning the country among global leaders in cutting-edge chip technology. The breakthrough is seen as a pivotal moment in Japan’s efforts to revitalize its domestic semiconductor industry.

The prototype was fabricated using advanced manufacturing equipment and processes licensed from IBM, which originally developed the 2nm technology. Rapidus aims to begin mass production by 2027 at its planned facility in Chitose, Hokkaido.

“This achievement is not just technological—it’s strategic,” said Atsuyoshi Koike, CEO of Rapidus. “The successful verification of the 2nm node demonstrates Japan’s ability to reclaim leadership in semiconductor innovation.”

The 2nm chips are expected to deliver significant improvements in performance and energy efficiency, enabling next-generation applications in AI, data centers, automotive systems, and high-performance computing.

Rapidus has partnered with global leaders such as IBM and imec to accelerate its technological roadmap. The company is also receiving strong support from the Japanese government, which sees semiconductor self-reliance as critical to national security and economic resilience.

With this verification, Japan becomes one of the few nations with verified 2nm capabilities, joining the likes of the U.S., South Korea, and Taiwan in the next phase of the global semiconductor race.

The milestone underscores Rapidus’s commitment to high-end chipmaking and signals a promising future for Japan’s advanced manufacturing sector.
