IndiGo has officially launched flight operations from Hindon Airport in Ghaziabad, expanding regional air connectivity under the UDAN scheme. The new flight routes were inaugurated by Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, making IndiGo the second airline to operate from the airport after Air India Express began its services four months ago.
With this development, Hindon Airport will now connect the National Capital Region to nine major Indian cities. These cities include Bengaluru, Kolkata, Varanasi, Goa, Patna, Chennai, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Indore. The move is expected to enhance travel options for passengers in western Uttar Pradesh and surrounding areas.
Speaking at the event, the Union Minister said, “This is an UDAN success of Hindon, Ghaziabad, western Uttar Pradesh, and the entire country. This is an UDAN of the ambitions and aspirations of common Indians.” He highlighted that over the past decade, India’s civil aviation sector has doubled in fleet size, terminal capacity and number of flyers.
The Minister also said that during the 2024 to 2034 period, tier two and tier three cities will witness major aviation growth and Hindon will be a model example of this progress. Hindon Airport and Indira Gandhi International Airport will now jointly serve flyers across the National Capital Region.
Hindon Airport was developed under the UDAN scheme in 2019 with a project cost of Rs 50 crore in partnership with the Indian Air Force. The Minister noted that annual passenger numbers from the airport have increased from 8,000 in 2019 to over 80,000 today.
To further boost regional air travel, the Union Budget 2025-26 has proposed a new phase of the UDAN scheme aimed at connecting 120 new destinations and facilitating travel for 4 crore passengers over the next ten years. Launched in April 2017, UDAN has played a major role in enhancing air connectivity in underserved regions.
