Netflix has revealed its use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in the production of the upcoming Argentine science-fiction series, “El Eternauta (The Eternaut).” This marks a significant step for the streaming giant in integrating advanced AI technologies into its content creation pipeline.
Ted Sarandos, Co-CEO of Netflix, highlighted the immense potential of AI in filmmaking, stating that it presents “an incredible opportunity to help creators make films and series better, not just cheaper.” He specifically cited “El Eternauta” as a prime example where AI proved instrumental in achieving complex visual effects that would have otherwise been financially prohibitive.
In the series, Netflix utilized generative AI to create a sophisticated visual effect depicting a building collapsing in Buenos Aires. According to Sarandos, this AI-assisted visual effects (VFX) sequence was completed remarkably faster and at a considerably lower cost compared to traditional methods, achieving the desired effect approximately 10 times quicker.
This application of AI underscores a growing trend in the entertainment industry to leverage new technologies for both creative enhancement and production efficiency. Netflix’s embrace of generative AI in a high-profile series like “El Eternauta” signals a future where AI tools play an increasingly integral role in bringing ambitious cinematic visions to life.
