China Unveils Superfast Maglev Train That Can Cover 1,200 km in Just 150 Minutes

China is set to transform rail travel with its newly tested magnetic levitation (Maglev) train that can reach speeds of up to 600 km per hour. The high-speed train promises to cut down the current 5.5-hour journey between Beijing and Shanghai to just 2.5 hours or 150 minutes.

The train was unveiled at the 17th Modern Railways exhibition and uses Maglev technology, which relies on opposing magnetic forces to lift the train off the track. This eliminates friction and enables faster, quieter, and smoother travel.

In a recent test conducted at Donghu Laboratory in Hubei Province in June, a 1.1-ton Maglev train accelerated to 404 mph in under 7 seconds on a 1,968-foot track. This follows a 2023 trial where the technology reached speeds exceeding 620 mph inside a vacuum tube that simulates near-zero air resistance. The breakthrough uses high-temperature superconducting levitation for silent, frictionless movement at record speeds.

The train was developed by the China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation and features a sleek, aerodynamic design with a pointed nose to reduce air drag. State broadcaster footage revealed a futuristic cabin layout with spacious interiors and large digital screens.

Engineers at Donghu Laboratory plan to complete the full-scale high-speed track by the end of 2025. The new Maglev train is part of several major transportation innovations currently under development in China.
